The Golden Gate Business Association honored BART directors at a reception at Lake Chalet Restaurant in Oakland October 5. The transit agency's board recently voted unanimously to expand its local/disadvantaged business preference program to include certified LGBT business enterprises, or LGBTBEs, as was explained in a Bay Area Reporter article in August. Gay BART board member Bevan Dufty, left, said that the agency also honored LaVerda Allen, center, as a trailblazer for her black woman-owned business, the Allen Group, which has operated for over 40 years. At right is Paul Pendergast, GGBA vice president for public policy. In addition to Dufty, BART directors Rebecca Saltzman, a lesbian and the board's president; Lateefah Simon; and Thomas Blalock attended.
